Asumbi Mission Hospital is a faith-based healthcare facility with a rich history rooted in the Asumbi Mission. What began as a missionary health clinic has grown into a Level 4 hospital serving thousands of patients annually with compassion, excellence, and dedication.

Our History
A Century of Faith, Healing, and Community Service
Missionary Beginnings (1920s–1950s)
The story of Asumbi Mission Hospital begins with the Asumbi Mission itself. In the early 20th century, Catholic missionaries from the Mill Hill Fathers arrived in the region. Father Cornelius Philippus Scheffer, a Dutch missionary who arrived in 1920, helped develop the mission to include schools, a convent for African Sisters, and a health clinic—considered one of the best mission stations in South Nyanza at the time.
The hospital building was constructed around 1950 by German missionaries, originally serving as an outpatient treatment base. Following the passing of the founding priest, the hospital remained unused for approximately 20 years.
Revival & Growth (2004–Present)
In 2004, a significant chapter began when the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph (FSJ/Asumbi Sisters) undertook the reconstruction and expansion of the hospital. These sisters, the first indigenous nuns in Kenya, were founded in Asumbi in the 1930s and have a proud legacy of establishing schools, hospitals, and social centers that transformed countless lives.
Today, Asumbi Mission Hospital stands as a Level 4 faith-based facility with 80 beds, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a wide range of quality healthcare services. We remain committed to delivering compassionate, affordable healthcare to all, guided by the values of our founders.
